چکیده

Compact Tension specimens were loaded at I and 7 mls with two different accelerations imposed. Experimental photoelastic patterns recorded by a high speed camera were compared with those simulated by dynamic elastic Finite Elernent (FE) analysis. The positive results of this comparison validated the FE analysis. It is demonstrated that when the initial acceleralion of the specimen is low (using a damper in the loading device), static analysis can be applied for both testing speeds used. In high accelerations tests (without damper used), a transient dynamic stress state in thc specimens is found, therefore a dynamic analysis should be used. Furthermore, in high acceleration tests a transient mixed mode of loading at the crack tip occurs. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF STOPPING HOLES IN THE CRACK GROWTH

The fracture and crack growth of mechanical structures is a usual phenomenon which is due to the application of tensile, cyclic loading or thermal stresses on the structure. So introducing of methods to prevent the crack growth is useful. Afterward, one of the repairing methods of crack growth, consisting to make a hole in the crack tip to elimi-nate the sharp corners, was explained. This metho...

Characterising the fracture toughness of polymers at moderately high rates of loading with the use of instrumented tensile impact testing

The more common use of instrumentation in impact testing opened up the possibility to apply fracture mechanics testing methods to polymers at moderately high impact rates. Tensile impact testing offers some advantages over the more common three-point bending and compact tension geometries. Most importantly the dynamic effects encountered at (moderately) high impact rates are less significant du...

Cracks Analysis in Zavin Concrete Dam Using Fracture Mechanics Approach

Most of the existing concrete dams are subjected to cracking. These cracks are caused by various factors such as construction practices, curing, loads and volume change of mass concrete which reduce the efficiency, failure or instability of concrete dams. Using fracture mechanics as a new method to estimate stability and durability of concrete dams is recommended in scientific publications in w...
